Classroom Guidance at Saxtons River Elementary School
Students have a wide variety of preventative education materials that I present to them during the school year. Choice of what curriculums are being used depends upon the needs of the class and teacher requests. Time spent in the classroom ranges from 30 to 40 minutes once weekly. Life Skills and Healthy Rocks curriculums run for 8 weeks. I have listed several programs to give you an idea of a variety of topics and the particular curriculum that is used.
*Goldstein’s Skillstreaming in Early Childhood and the Elementary School Childhood
This program consists of sixty prosocial skills for grades 4-6 and thirty prosocial skills for grades k-3. This curriculum includes Beginning Social Skills, Classroom Survival Skills, Friendship-Making Skills, and Skills for Dealing with Feelings, Skill Alternatives to Aggression, and Skills for Dealing
with Stress. Students learn why the skill is important, model the skill, role-play the skill, and hopefully transfer the skill at home, school, and in the community.
Health Rocks is a health program for the upper elementary student. Lessons are activity based where students gather information on tobacco, alcohol and other drugs. Students learn to make healthy choices while having some fun with the game-type format. Certificates, pens, stress balls, and a Health Rock t-shirt are received at the end of the program. This curriculum is sponsored by the 4-H through the University of Vermont Extension Services.
*Life Skills - Eight lessons presented to grades k-5. Students have their own workbook that is sent home at the completion of the eight lessons. A parent newsletter is sent each week to describe the lesson and helpful information for the family as well to help instill healthy choices around tobacco. Topics include: Self-Esteem, Decision-Making, Tobacco Information, Advertising, Dealing with Stress, Communication Skills, Social Skills, and Assertiveness.
*Know Your Body Health Kit- Each grade level has their own KYB kit and lessons are appropriate for that grade and age group. Some lessons are co-taught by nurse, guidance, or physical education.
*Second Step is a violence prevention program for grades K-5. It teaches empathy, impulse control, and managing anger. Students are guided through the lessons, which are modeled and get to do some role-plays, which they are eager to participate in. This program helps students deal with teasing and helps in the prevention of bullying and harassment.
