Central Elementary School letterhead contains a motto. “Passion to Learn, Compassion for All. “ This expresses in simplest terms what our school culture is all about and the foundation of my educational philosophy. What is this “passion to learn”? It is the desire we share at Central School to grow and become new over and over again. Our staff seek to understand new methods for teaching, to utilize the latest brain research and to wrap around each child as a learner. You will find them discussing their latest readings and professional workshops, and talking about their methodology. You will find us meeting with teams from other schools to align our curriculum and share ideas. We will meet with consultants when we don’t have the answer
to a question. You will see teachers and parents meeting to better serve a child’s needs.
We want children at Central School to be passionate about learning. How do we do this? We capitalize on every child’s innate drive to grow! The natural energy to learn is transmitted from student to teacher, teacher to teacher, teacher to student, and from student to student. It is the spark of joy and discovery we share each day as we come together. We ask parents, as vital members of this community, to share an optimistic attitude towards education, towards school, and towards learning. The most effective way to encourage children is to be open minded and enthusiastic.
“Compassion for All” We care about each other, and about all children. We care about families. Our veteran staff knows that we are collaborating as a community, to ensure the safety, health and well being of children. The “All” in this phrase expresses our commitment to each person who walks through our doors. It is never a question of tolerating diversity but of celebrating what makes us each unique. All are welcome.
And what is our major function? We are here to teach your children. We will teach them to read, write, manipulate numbers, and ask questions. We want their imaginations to get exercise and their bodies, too. We want them to develop logic and reasoning and to listen well. We want them to express themselves carefully and fully. We want them to get along with each other, and become responsible for themselves, their actions and their growth. We want them to figure out how they learn best. There will be tests. There are standards we strive to achieve. There are expectations which match their developmental abilities. When we measure their successes, we will set new goals and celebrate together.
At Central School we have an extraordinary team of teachers and para educators who you can count on, and who I do count on. Their attitude inspired that simple phrase; “Passion to Learn, Compassion for All.”
