Biography / Philosophy

Physical education is a crucial part of any school curriculum because it contributes to the development of every student’s physical, social, and emotional health and well being.  A physically-educated student should have the knowledge, skills, ability, and motivation to participate in many different physical activities, to become proficient in a few of those activities, and to maintain personal health.  Such results stem from a fun, challenging, safe, adventurous, and meaningful physical education curriculum.  Physical education is based upon the development of motor, balance, and manipulative skills in a developmentally appropriate sequence during which the students have sufficient academic time to learn and practice those skills in a meaningful and fun environment.  Students also need to learn about movement directions, pathways, force, and self-space.
Physical Education is place to develop personal fitness, muscular strength, cardiorespiratory endurance, and various physical skills, but also a place to teach every student about positive social and personal character attributes such as personal and social responsibility, following rules and directions, cooperation, participation, teamwork, fair play, communication, and problem solving.  Every student is unique and needs to be taught in a differentiated way in order to provide opportunities for them to learn and to succeed. I believe that all students deserve appropriate classroom modifications in order to ensure their learning and success.
A goal that I have for my students is for them to learn appropriate personal and social behaviors within the safety of the school in order for them to make good decisions outside of school which will keep them safe, happy, and healthy.  I put a lot of effort into taking advantage of positive and negative circumstances in each of my classes with the goal of turning them into teachable moments where I can discuss with my students how following directions, good sportsmanship, increasing personal fitness levels, and working together are absolutely critical for a successful physical education program.
Students are taught and assessed to fulfill the state and district physical education learning standards as well as the six national content standards for physical education, which were designed by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (N.A.S.P.E.).
